In Memory of 'our' Ian Pubby Hunter ...
Here is the first page of the collection of emails I have received on the ESSEX-List sofar:
Dear Essex-UK Listers,
I am very sad to have to announce that Ian died yesterday, 16th September
2003. The only other detail I know is that he had been in Intensive Care in
Colchester General Hospital.
He made a tremendous contribution to this list and to family history in
Essex in general. He will be sorely missed.
Please join me by raising your glasses (good English beer by preference) to
a great guy.
Regards
Elmo.
I raise my glass also, Ian will be a great loss to the list,
Rest in peace Ian and what ever pub your in I hope we will all meet you there one day.
With deapest sympathy
Judith George
I have just read the email from Elmo and am saddened to hear of Ian's
death. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. May he blessed to
know all his genealogy answers now.
He gave me many a chuckle and much information and his precious time.
May God have blessed you.

What a dreadful loss, I'm totally gutted by this news. Ian was a wonderful
Essex historian a kind, generous and witty contributor to Essex List and a
dear friend to me and many others here. Ian's unique Essex Pub site will
always be the standard of good research for Essex people.
Cheers! Here's to you, Ian, you were totally unique my old mate. Never
forgotten.
Colleen
What a shock. I am so sorry to hear the
news. Ian 'Pubby' Hunter was a breath of fresh air and a very willing person
to answer any question. He will be missed by everyone who was fortunate to
have known him.

I too would like to express my sadness at Ian's loss. His messages were
always amusing and informative, and his knowledge amazing.
If anyone is in touch with his family, please add my condolences, even
though they don't know me.
I hope the 'celestial pub' keeps his favourite beers.

Sue & Len Chilvers, Vic. Australia
I have only been on the Essex list for a few months but it didn't take long
for me to realise that Ian was one of the 'legends' of the list. As everyone
else has already said, he will be greatly missed.
My deepest sympathy to his family.
Pam (Downes, as I know there is another Pam on the list)
He has been so helpful to so many. A very sad loss, my condolences to his family.

I have only just turned on my machine and was so so sorry to hear about the
passing of Ian, he was one of the good guys, always willing to help, and
with a wit to envy. The list won't be the same without him.
Patti
I have not been on this list for long but I too have been helped by Ian and
agree he will be sorely missed. Please pass my regards to his family.
Sue - Sunderland
I son't often post messages to the list, partly because my computer is always going down. But on one of the rare occaisions that it was working, I switched on and saw the awful news about Ian. I'm so shocked and saddened. Ian was always good for a laugh and cheered me up on a number of occaisions when frustration with the ancestors was high.
Karina McHugh
I also am particularly upset by the news of Ian's death. He was a good
friend to me and patiently assisted me with several Essex topics. He was
always cheerful, had a joke and gave me much needed information.
Regards Mary and Andrew McKinlay in Tasmania
Ian has answered several of my queries to the list.
Sorry to hear of his death - his sense of humour will be missed.

memories ...
Blessings Always Ian

I only joined the list last week and I hadn't had the pleasure of dealing
with Ian. But it speaks volumes about the man that he was regarded in such
high esteem by people from all over the world that he came in contact with.
Such people are few and far between.
My condolences to his family.
Sally Roberts
Ian helped me with some much needed information. He will be sorely missed.

I also add my condolences to Ian's family and my sadness at his passing. I
have enjoyed his witty and informed contributions and have been very
appreciative of help that he has given. He was a lovely man and I'm sure
that we all have felt that we knew him through the list.

Much saddened by Ian's untimely demise. Such a shame, and he will be sorely
missed by all of us, Bless him, and his family.
He was a lively, witty, helpful friend to all, and I hope he finds the best
pub ever, in the Sky.
Sincerely
Cedric Godfrey - Nottingham U.K.
To Ian now residing in that Great Big Pub in the Sky, we raise a glass or
two.
Deepest Sympathy to his family and remember all the good times and laughter
you had.
Cheers Heather.
Like others, I mourn the passing of 'Pubby' aka (in other quarters) 'Sir Ian of Tiptree'. A truly charitable man whose wit and humour was appreciated by us all. I well remember the consternation which his temporary departure from the List occasioned, (was it last year?) and the enthusiasm which his return engendered. He was a well respected and one might go so far as to say, much loved member of this and other Lists. We are *all* the poorer for his loss.
Geo. (Western Australia).
I am truly sorry to hear of the passing of Ian, he was a true Gent and he will be sorely missed.
God Bless you for all your help Ian.
My condolences to his family.
Sheila.
what a shock to hear the terrible news. It was only a few weeks ago we were
having quite a banter about my love for red wine and his for lager.
I shall have one of each in his memory.
From a sad S. France, Mick and Chris
Ian was kind and a great help to me and many more i am sure on this and
other list's that he was on.
Here's to you Ian.
Jill an Essex girl in Western Australia
Ian was a great person, with a humour and knowledge that will be missed
by all.
Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
Gordon and Linda
When ever I asked he was always willing to help where he could - I never asked often but his generosity of spirit left a lasting impression.
If Elmo was to print out all these messages it would make a lovely "package" to show his family how much he was appreciated by all of us here.
Cheers
Charles Cowell - Victoria, Australia
Please add my condolences as well to the family of Ian,
He be sadly missed by all of us
Kind Regards
Yvonne Burder
Such a dreadful shock to wake up to news of Ian's death, and my heartfelt
sympathy goes out to his family. Ian was a marvellous historian and a good
friend to the Essex list, always giving so freely of his time and experience
(he helped my own research on more than one occasion). And as for his
wonderful, impish sense of humour - his remarks often made me laugh aloud!
I never met him in person but, like so many others, I will miss him so very
much.
Goodbye Ian, old mate - have a pint or two of the good stuff on me!
Sue
I am new to this list and unfortuneately have never had the opportunity of Ian's advice. However the sympathy and outpouring of support for his family is a tribute to him and the members of this list. I knew my Essex roots were good people. My condolances to his family. His example will be a standard for us all.
Betty Young Ontario Canada
Please send my sincere condolences to Ian's family. He was such a kind
person. We always had a laugh over our different tastes in alcohol and his sense
of humour was second to none.
I will miss receiving his up-dates to my one-name study.
Cheers,
Helen M. Cox AKA 'Toots'
